Back in the Game

This innovative and unique physical education and training program, sponsored by the Foster Foundation and the Menges Family, helps children recovering from cancer or other blood disorders regain strength, balance, flexibility and overall fitness in a fun and safe environment and assimilate into everyday sports and physical activities faster. The program is designed to reintroduce physical activity and strength building after treatment has ended. Participation enables children and adolescents to feel strong and healthy and regain a sense of physical control.

Piloted and developed by the Professional Athletic Performance Center in conjunction with Winthrop-University Hospital's Cancer Center for Kids, the program is open to young cancer patients regardless of where they are being treated. The staff of Back in the Game includes world-class licensed physical therapists, many of whom hold dual licenses/certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and/or the National Athletic Trainers Association. They are educated to recognize, evaluate, treat and train every individual safely, with a focus on fun.

The 12 Week Program Includes:

  • One-on-One evaluation and consultation
  • One-on-One fitness and physical therapy
  • Group fitness and conditioning (2 sessions per week/45 minutes per session)

This 20,000-square-foot center is a place where every child can have fun and improve every aspect of their physical fitness while increasing their competitive edge. The Center includes:
  • Physical therapy facility
  • Weight training/conditioning area
  • Six-lane, 60-yard indoor track
  • Athletic turf field
  • Hard-court surface
  • Hockey rink with synthetic ice surface
  • Two golf cages
  • Viewing room for parents

Who is eligible:

  • Childhood cancer survivors between the ages 8-18
